50s. north of the bay 39 santa rosa, 38 degrees in napa through vallejo. meanwhile, temperatures today under a mostly sunny sky albeit hazy into the 60s. winds kicking up tonight. san leandro is the hot spot now a traffic alert in effect northbound 880 at marina boulevard. there was a crash about two hours ago but it did some damage to the guardrail and they are repairing it. it could be blocked, the left lane, for a while longer causing delays coming into the san leandro area. if you are heading to oakland, problem-free near oakland airport if you are dropping somebody off or picking somebody up. silicon valley commuters, everything is great to sunnyvale . the zipper truck is opening up lanes. we try to find the truck every

[ laughter ] >> all right. thank you, elizabeth. video from inside the plane as it lowered into the pacific with the parachute. anne makovec joins us in the newsroom with the remarkable cockpit video. >> reporter: he ran out of fuel and instead of falling to his death, he became a niche hero. we now have new video of that pilot parachuting his plane into the pacific ocean. now, you may have seen this video of leu morton's plane falling into the ocean. a parachute deployed from the plane to soften the blow. this was shot by the coast guard recording his descent. morton had a gopro camera rolling in the cockpit. and in that video, it shows the ocean below that cruise ship that came to save him and a look at the parachute. then eventually you will see morton mouthing the words "this is gonna be fun." before he lands in the ocean, 250 miles from maui. >> without any injuries, it's a

pretty remarkable thing to be able to say. >> morton had radioed for help when he was running out of fuel on a flight from tracy to hawaii. the coast guard directed him to an area near a cruise ship and that ship sent a vessel to pull him out of the water. and on the way down, morton also told his father that he loved him. we'll hear more from morton coming up in the next half- hour. live in the newsroom, anne makovec, kpix 5. hip pop mogul suge knight has just been arrested on suspicion of murder. as don champion reports, his arrest follows a deadly hit-and- run in los angeles county. reporter: wearing sunglasses and flanked by his attorney former death row records founder suge knight turned himself in to los angeles police overnight. >> can you say anything about the allegations against you? >> reporter: after being questioned, investigators charged knight with murder in the deadly hit-and-run police say he was involved in thursday afternoon. witnesses say it happened in the parking lot of this compton

fast-food restaurant after an argument. >> i noticed that they was arcing pretty loud. suge knight turned around and walked towards his car. >> reporter: once inside his red pickup truck witnesses say knight ran over two men one of them terry carter an actor and friend died. police say a second man was injured. >> so far the people we have talked to looked like it was intentional so we are handling it as a homicide. >> reporter: about 20 minutes before the accident, investigators say knight got into an argument at another location in compton. knight's attorney told police the argument continued at the fast-food restaurant and that his client accidentally ran over the two men as he was being attacked. >> red pickup truck involved in this. those people were also at the other altercation so yes, it all suggests that he was the person driving that truck. >> reporter: knight has a history of run-ins with the law. last year, he was charged in a robbery case and faces 30 years to life in prison if convicted. in 1996, he was driving the car that rapper tupac was shot and killed in. don champion, cbs news.

>> last year, knight was shot six times at a los angeles nightclub. a corte madera doctor heading back to court now today to face new charges in a road rage shooting. a grand jury indicted dr. james simon on charges of assault with a deadly weapon. earlier this month, though, a judge dropped the manslaughter charges. kpix 5 legal analyst melissa griffin-caen says it's an unusual move for a d.a. >> reporter: generally speaking you would give it your best shot in one forum and if it doesn't work, it doesn't work and you move on or try to get a plea deal. but to actively go forth and try to get indictments from two different venues under four different charges is actually not that common. >> simon and william ostenton were involved in a road rage incident. a boy said he was sexually assaulted on the way home from

tuesday. the 10-year-old said he was walking on the 1100 block of 98th avenue when a man approached her, took him to an area nearby and sexual assaulted him. the boy got away. the suspect is latino 40 to 50 years old. police say there was something that may make him stand out. >> the distinctive features the suspects has short hair salt and pepper with a thick or bushy beard that's also salt and pepper. >> police say the suspect was last seen wearing a brown leather jacket and dark pants. he had an unkempt appearance and may loiter in the area. marin county confirms two children have the measles. health officials say the patients are siblings were unvaccinated and became infected outside the county. kids were out of school during the infectious period and will be isolated for three weeks. a patient in northern california is being tested for ebola virus. the patient is currently at the

uc-davis medical center in sacramento. one of 8 hospitals in the state equipped for potentially ebola patients. the hospital says the patient is in good condition sand in isolation so there's no risk to the public. it's not clear though when the test results will be complete. and a state senator has introduced a bill that would raise the legal smoking age in california from 18 to 21. he says his bill would curb tobacco use among teenagers. the legal smoking age in most states is 18. it's 19 in a few states. only some cities and counties including now, have raised the smoking age -- including new york city, have raced the smoking age to 21. some pricy wine stolen from a napa county restaurant is back where it belongs. 76 bottles were stolen from the french laundry restaurant in yountville. 72 bottles were returned and they are worth up to $300,000. they were recovered last week from a collector in north

with the forecast, here's roberta. once we get rid of the fog, we'll have sunshine. our live weather camera towards san jose this morning. we have mostly cloudy skies but we also have hints of fog working their way from the central valley back into san jose where yesterday the fog was so dense, we had airport delays at mineta international airport which is very rare. we'll keep you apprised of that situation as the morning progresses. right now, we do have fog and visibility down to a quarter mile in santa rosa at 37 degrees. it is now 43 in livermore with cloud cover. and san francisco's reporting 52 degrees and the winds are calm. here's what you need to know out the door. areas of fog developing under a mostly cloudy sky. we'll be sunny today and we'll see near or record warmth this weekend for the second consecutive weekend. and rain, well, at least a chance of it by thursday and friday. more on that but right now we do have rain in southern california from the mojave desert to the sonora desert, glendale with rain showers through tomorrow at the site of

i'm frank mallicoat. nearly 5:30. a silicon valley company could be the tesla of the truck world. >> kiet do explains how right speed is converting dirty trucks into lean clean electric machines and it's something you'll only see on 5. reporter: deep in the heart of silicon valley is the geekiest, dare i say sexiest delivery truck you will ever see. >> um, how does it drive? >> why don't you drive it and see? >> ready? >> all right, hang on. here we go. oh, my goodness! on the outside it looks like a typical delivery truck but its v-8 engine and drive train were removed and replaced with a 26- kilowatt battery and pair of electric motors that have been throttled down from 500 to 200- horsepower. >> why would you want to give

up 500-horsepower? wright speed expects to grow 10 times bigger and have more than 200 employees by 2018. and wright himself has electric vehicle street cred. he is one of the cofounders of tesla with elon musk. is he jealous of you? >> i don't think so. he is on a different mission. he loves what we're doing. he says it's great, of course everybody does. >> reporter: imagine a future where garbage trucks run cleaner, faster, cheaper, and more quietly. what's not sexy about that? and so the range of these trucks is about 40 miles on the battery. after that, the jet turbine kicks in runs on natural gas that powers the generator and that makes the truck go even farther with fewer emissions and much cheaper fuel source. so kind of a win-win-win all the way around. >> fascinating. i'm imagining not having a brake though. that was interesting concept. but how much does all of of this cost, kiet? >> reporter: so, your typical garbage truck can run about a

had a parachute that saved him over the weekend. anne. >> reporter: he ran out of fuel and knew his plane was about to fall into the ocean. but instead of panicking, this pilot lived in the moment. we now have a new view of it recorded by the pilot himself. >> i love you took on a different meaning. >> reporter: leu morton calmly told his father he loved him as the coast guard filmed his cirrus plane fall from the sky and deploy a parachute. >> it's definitely been one that's seen by lots of people. >> reporter: you might have seen this video. >> the parachute deploys just like it's designed. >> reporter: but morton also shot his own gopro video which shows him gaze toward the ocean and the cruise ship that came to save him and then he shows the parachute billowing above him. he even mouths the words, this is going to be fun. >> i just passed one big hurdle. but now i still have all these other hurdles to go through. >> reporter: next up how to crash his plane into the pacific ocean. >> it was a pretty aggressive hit, hitting the water about 15

to 20 miles an hour. >> reporter: the video shows him exit the plane a couple of hundred miles from hawaii where his 400-mile flight delivering the plane was to end. >> without any injuries is a pretty remarkable thing to be able to say. >> reporter: he survived this. >> it's -- it's still a little kind of surreal to me. >> reporter: thanks to a remarkable parachute and a quick response from the coast guard and a nearby holland america cruise ship. after he exited the plane and floated over on a raft, they sent a vessel nearby to pull him to safety. >> this is the life jacket. >> reporter: remember that life jacket he wore in the gopro video? now morton carries it with him. physical proof that he survived. morton works for a company that transports planes. he was flying this one from tracy toward a final destination in australia where it was supposed to be handed off to its new owner. >> lucky guy. anne, do we have any idea what went wrong during the flight? >> reporter: that's still under investigation. it ran out of fuel but it had

the outdoor cafe. his wife is white. apparently the employee thought he may have been trying to sell her something. here's the cafe's response. >> i'm horrified. i mean, i -- i think it's just awful that somebody could come here and have an experience like that. i want to hear from him what happened. and then what we can do, um, to -- to move forward and do something about this situation. >> bell is perhaps best known for his fx show totally biased. bell blogged last night that he and his wife talked to the owner afterwards and decided to have a public conversation. er in not calling for anyone to be fired or a boycott. time now is 5:39. and the super bowl is this sunday in arizona. but a year from now, super bowl 50 will be played in santa clara. as kpix 5's joe vazquez reports, local organizers are in arizona getting a crash course in big game prep. >> reporter: with a million extra people here in phoenix for the festivities surrounding the biggest game of the year,

safety is a major priority. as tight as security is here at the pre-game festivities in downtown phoenix, about 15 miles away in glendale they are ratcheting it up even more. on game day, blackhawk helicopters will fly the perimeter of the stadium in glendale enforcing a no-fly zone. cameras will send video back to command centers. >> the more we see the better off we can be proactively monitoring. >> reporter: the faa reminds everyone this is a "no drone" zone. >> leave your drone at home. >> reporter: everything and everyone will be searched even the halftime superstar. officials said katy perry and her band will be looked over thoroughly. with all these extra cops it may seem like a war zone but the host committee chair from san francisco who is touring the festivities says there's a balance and they want to get it right when the games are in the bay area. >> you don't want security to

good morning, it's friday, january 30. and we are taking a look at the

beautiful big old bow and arrow on the embarcadero under mostly cloudy skies. thanks to photo journalist gregg welk for providing this beautiful view for us as we start our friday morning. we have hazy sunshine on tap today. highs in the 60s. we'll talk about the near and record warmth expected that's still coming up. >> well, you probably have never seen the grand canyon look just like this. time lapse video from the national park service shows a sea of fog filling the canyon. it's beautiful. it's called the total cloud inversion. it happens when most cold air gets trapped in the canyon below under a layer of warm air. doesn't happen very often but yesterday it was the second time in the last six weeks and they caught it on camera. >> beautiful. a call from telemarketers to sell a product turned into a call that saved a woman's life. >> ah! [ screaming and crying ] >> get out! >> an oregon woman on the other end never said hello but she unknowingly answered the phone

and got the telemarketer's attention. the person heard the woman's screens as she was beaten and that's when she called police 900 miles away. >> we were not going to hang up this phone on the young lady at all. as far as i was concerned, the people in that room, we were the only lifeline. >> deputies in oregon quickly arrived and found the woman gasping for air. they arrested her ex-boyfriend. the victim says her phone was in her back pocket and she didn't know who called police. it is 5:45 now. it's friday. are we "friday light" out on the roads there, elizabeth? >> eh. so so. they just turned on the metering lights. they have been turning them on earlier and earlier. it used to be right around now 5:45 and that was early to switch on the lights and now all this week they have been on at 5:40, today 5:39. if you time out your commute like others minute by minute this affects you. so you're already stacked up to

the overcrossing and metering lights have been on in the cash and fastrak lanes for a while. we have a traffic alert still in effect in san leandro. there was an overnight accident northbound 880 at marina boulevard. did some damage to the sand barrels there. so they have the left lane blocked off and we have a bit of a jam-up now to -- looks like maybe the 238 interchange? the estimated time of opening about 7. so those delays are probably going to get worse before they get better. so if you are maybe heading to oakland airport into oakland for whatever, you may hit a bit of a snag there in san leandro. but the oakland commute looks okay if you are hopping on the nimitz. it's friday. so we like to ask what drives you crazy on your commute. viewer ronald wants to know about cars making turns in bike lanes. he writes:

minute it is getting foggier and foggier right there across the santa clara valley. right now we do have visibility problems in santa rosa. quarter of a mile due to pockets of dense fog at 37 degrees. livermore's overcast at 43. it's cloudy in oakland at 50. and we have some cloud cover in the city of san francisco at 50 degrees so we have fog now developing right here in the bay area. it will scrub out, we'll have some hazy sunshine and near or record warmth this weekend for the second weekend in a row. and if you want rain, i do, all right, it looks like we have at least an opportunity a chance of rain showers on thursday by midday. right now we have plenty of rain. it's subtropical in nature and it's blowing across the mojave desert into the sonora desert. this is important to us because as this low kicks east, we have high pressure building in right here causing wind tonight. we'll see increase winds out of the north 20 to 35 miles per hour. by lunch today 11-mile-per-hour winds along the coast.

[ laughter ] happening today a candlelight vigil is planned in memory of a jogger killed by street racers in san jose. family and friends will gather to remember 24-year-old kiran pabla. she was on her morning jog monday when street racers veered off the road and killed

her. the vigil starts at 5:30 at a sikh temple on morillo avenue. the city is now trying to get drivers to slow down on the street where pabla was killed. police say the two suspects were going more than 70 miles an hour on yerba buena road. now a radar sign lets drivers know when they are going over the 40-mile-per-hour speed limit. officials hope people will slow down when they see they are speeding. the mayor says the city is exploring other options to make the area safer including reinforced guardrails. state law does not allow speed bumps where the speed limit is above 25 miles an hour. we are now hearing from some of the people who made some dramatic escapes from that apartment building that burned in san francisco's mission district wednesda at 22nd and mission. tenants didn't hear smoke detectors. 13-year-old alessandro gonzalez says he was trapped as thick black smoke filled the hallway. >> i tried to open the window

and it wouldn't budge open so i pushed it really hard and it actually shattered. but it still opened. >> alessandro grabbed his dog went through the window on to the fire escape. cell phone video captured him going down the ladder, dropped the dog to rescuers and he jumped into the arms of a police officer. on the other side of the building firefighters rescued 7 people trapped on two fire escapes. and an investigation into an alleged sexual assault by a stanford athlete finds the suspect was drunk and so was the woman. star swimmer brock allen turner was arrested and dismissed from school for the alleged rape last week. the freshman tells police he had at least 7 drinks the night of the incident. police say turner was found by two grad students on top of a completely unresponsive girl outside the kappa alpha fraternity. the students say turner tried to run but they tackled him until police arrived. turner told deputies his
